The default works very well and is almost the same for Odyssey and (I assume) Valhalla. It takes just a little bit of time to get used to the old controls again if you play an old school AC. There are a few buttons changes like calling mount and stuff for Valhalla but mostly the same as origins. Alternative.

A quick Google search would suggest using xbox360ce, which emulates the 360 controller (AC1 was terrible at detecting anything else). There's also fixed in the Steam forum if you're using the XB1 controller, but the first option helped me the first time I played through it. How. Its an ini and dll.

No official controller support in game. Which makes no sense when AC III has controller support. Wireless Xbox controller works out of the box, no need to start in big picture mode or anything. The statement on the storefront "this game was not designed to be played with a controller" can safely be ignored.
